OK so you need to be well acquainted with the Bachchan phenomenon to know the gravity of the situation. There is a film to be released, critics to be pleased ,audiences to be enamoured and the dignity of a 65+ actor to be salvaged in a largely prudish environment. At the centre of it all is the gigantic personality(both real and reel) of Mr Amitabh Bachhan. Had it not been for KBC some 10 odd years back, he could well be playing the part of an erstwhile hero trying to sell his autobiography that no one really cares about.
After being catapulted back into the whirlwind of success he has helped a couple of people into becoming karorpatis and impressed billions with his charm, wit and modesty. One of the few actors in our industry delivering the most memorable and thundering dialogues, touching rock bottom in personal and professional spheres and buoyantly bouncing back and probably the only one to be considered "sexy" at his age.
The reason why I am going on trying to explain and elucidate the life and times of this angry young man is because the film that released this weeks is a culmination of all this and more.We see Mr Bachchan after all these years finally cashing in on the Brand Bachchan that he so laboriously knit together.
For a man considered the global face of The Indian Film Industry ,both respected for his professional endeavor and ridiculed for his personal enterprisingness this was akin to tight rope walking. But what Director Puri Jagannadh achieves is marvellous. Big B's nemesis as some would like to suggest, its a story of a man getting back at any and every1 who calls him a budhha .(aren't we all)Its a role no one else could have dared to do. In the first naive glance the way the movie is shot and revolves around the protagonist ,it almost seems like a hen pecked father launching his newcomer son.But we know better. The protagonist is himself the "baap"of everyone and his greatness doesn't need to be launched. It has to be simply showcased. So enters Amitabh bachhans lighting up the screen. His deep grainy voice ,debonair looks and signature style movements make for a paisa vasoon watch. And when his character on screen asks the young 20 something girl how he looks-we all want to say"sexy"!!!
Amitabh films never go unnoticed so in that respect this film is going to be no different. But surprising is the fact that although its success bears witness to big B's big star status it will rule the bog office because of his brilliant acting, tight script and balanced storyline.Looking at the promos, seeing him in flashy clothes jumping around with Raveena we were all scared and who could have blamed us.After all Nishabd has stunned us all into silence. We thought this role would be the last nail in the coffin of bachchan's stardom. But we could not have been more wrong. And like all major problamatic issues that resolve themselves and make us look stupid because the answer is usually right under our noses while we pick on it and look all around this one does too. we were trying to carve out huge, larger than life roles for Mr Bachchan while the trick was simple. He simply has to play himself- himself being grand and larger than life as compares to his on screen characters.
Infact his presence makes everyone else look good too. Be it the southern actress Charmy who plays Raveena's daughter in the film or Prakash Raj bringing alive the gangster on screen. The film is ridiculously good.
Calling this film a must watch and asking you to go for it would be sacrilegious . Amitabh Bachchan is the god of the big screen and while we are emotional about him and would anyway watch whatever he has to offer this movie by not abusing our aesthetic sense makes us enjoy it even more.
Yes old he definitely is not, because ageing for a creative person is his inability to perform his craft and Mr Bachchan is younger than the so called young 40 something actors churning out such mind blowing performances.
All i have to say at the end is "hail Amitabh-baap re baap kamaal hain aap!!!
