The promos, the songs ,the startcast everything hinted at a rather pleasant film,but nothing really prepares us for the kind of freshness and exuberance that the film and its characters exude. At first glance it seems like Dil chahta hai with a better haircut.Look deeper and we know its a gem.Zoya Akhter seems to have found her niche with one.Half the battle is won with the most desirable ensemble cast. Off screen chemistry sure works magic on screen too- Hritik and Farhan hit off brilliantly and with somebody as competent as Abhay Deol joining in ,the party seems to be forever.
Now add to this chemistry between the actors ,the geography of Spain and the equation is perfect.The film to a large extent works as a guided tour of Spain.The beauty of the place,the scenic background and the frolic of the La Tomatina and Bull fight seem to have been seamlessly incorporated into the cinematography of the film.What lifts it above the ordinary is the brilliant bonding that the cast shares and manages to pour out in front of the camera.The film works for us at many levels. Kabir(Abhay Deol),Imaran(farhan) and Arjun(Hritik) decide to go for a bachelor party to Spain post kabir's engagement to Natasha(kalki) and to honour the pact they had made in college. Their bonding and friendship bound to make us nostalgic about our long lost friends.The jokes are so hilarious and the performance so ridiculously good that we wonder if it was rehearsed at all. The film also works as an aphorism to the Carpe Diem philosophy of "seize the day" as epitomised by the character of Laila(katrina). Zoya akhtar does a commendable job sketching out each character, elaborating on their insecurities-be it Kalki and her possessiveness about her on screen Beau or Arjun and his view of life as seen through the prism of the stock market and falling and reviving shares.
The first half is a brilliant prelude to the resolution of the fears and tensions of the characters that happens later. By the time its the interval we are not just happily munching popcorn's infact eating out of the hands of the characters. Who would have thought Farhan akhtar with his laid back approach would make even Hritik roshan fight hard for our applause. With the 3 male actors hitting off brilliantly we have a cracker.Katrina looks exquisite and kalki a delight on screen. So the only thing you are left feeling bad about is your obdurate and stubborn boss thanks to whom you have had to can your last holiday. Spain with its beautiful locales and deep sea diving and sky diving shot with much fan fare beckon us and we yearn for a holiday!!!who wouldn't
For a little bit post interval when the pace slackens and its unnecessarily stretched on the whole the movie is a winner. Seize the day philosophy is infectious and will make you feel rejuvenated but I suggest first seize the tickets for the film. On its way to becoming one of the top grosser this year ,its sure to run houseful for a couple of weeks!!
